All the way to Hong Kong on the ferry, she battled with the same question – whether to try talking to him again – but she knew it was pointless. Thanh was nothing if not a man of his word. Her only option was to move on without his help, risking arrest and incarceration ad infinitum. In other words, back to square one. The alternative was to abandon her family and go to ground, again. She changed clothes in the ferry toilets, relieved to get out of her fishy combats, then stood on deck, willing the universe to give her a break. The wind blew her hair into her face and the sun beat down on her shoulders. Face it, kid, the universe doesn’t give a shit. Make your own luck.

Backpack secured, she trudged down the gangway in Kowloon and made a call from a telephone booth to reserve accommodation. It was a convenient moment to check if she’d been followed. No one registered on her radar so she beckoned a taxi and told him to take her to Kowloon Xanadu, right in the middle of an exclusive shopping district and mere streets away from the Lucky Bee Residences. She needed a few hours’ sleep and the chance to assume the persona of a well-heeled European jet-setter. From there, it was imperative she convert the remaining money she was carrying into something portable and accessible. A cryptocurrency transfer required some P2P exchange. If only she could have brought Morten along.

Tomorrow, she had to catch a flight to somewhere in Europe and enter the UK via a less obvious route than Heathrow Airport. Presuming she was willing to stick her head over that parapet. The taxi driver, she suspected, was the same one who’d transported her from the airport, judging by his driving style and nauseating air-freshener. Fortunately, she was no longer jet-lagged and culture-shocked. In fact, it was almost like coming home.

The desk clerk at Xanadu quickly concealed his alarm with a fake smile but obduracy had set in. Olivia summoned all her energy. This was one fight she was not going to lose.

“Good afternoon, madam, how can I help?”

Accent first. Cut-glass upper-class Brit. “Oh, hello.” It sounded like hellayer. “Can’t tell you what a relief it is to get here. Nightmare journey, total nightmare.” She rolled her eyes. “The name’s Isherwood and I have a reservation for two nights.”

He turned his attention to his screen. “I don’t appear to have anything under the name of Isherwood, I’m afraid.”

“Impossible. My father’s PA sent me confirmation twenty minutes ago. I could show you the reservation number if some utter bastard hadn’t filched my handbag! A luxury suite, that much I recall. Oh, wait! She probably booked it under my married name. Do you have anything for Isabella Dauncey?”

Doubt crept over his face. While he checked the screen once more, she withdrew a twenty-dollar bill from one of the pockets of her combat trousers and placed it on his console. “I’m in urgent need of the loo, so if we could hurry, I’d be most grateful.
